LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ACCOUNTING PROGRAM

By the end of the programme, students should be able to:

1) acquire in-depth knowledge of finance concepts and theories within their areas of     specialisation.

2) conceptualize, organise and resolve complex problems within the areas of study.

3) conduct and synthesize research in the specialise disciplines.

4) use appropriate computer technologies to analyse research data.

5) demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines through a report     writing and presentation of the research.

6) formulate an integrated research between Islamic and conventional finance theories     in their respective field of study.

7) apply modern finance theory in a corporate decision-making process using     appropriate communication and critical thinking skills.

8) integrate change of information technology in their decision –making processes.

9) utilize leadership skills, resolve conflict and act independently.

10) develop an awareness of the ethical and environmental ramifications of their      decisions.



ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Applications are to be made on the prescribed forms, which may be obtained from the Admissions Unit, Admissions and Records Division (A&R). The general requirements for admission into the program are as follows:

  A relevant Bachelor's degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning or any other certificate recognized to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant professional experiences.
   
  English Language requirements of at least 550 in TOEFL or 6.0 in IELTS

DURATION

Students may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students must enroll for a minimum of 9-12 credit hours per semester. Part-time students may register for 3 to 6 credit hours each semester.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Master of Accounting program comprises of 36 credit. Students are required to take 6 core courses (equivalent to 18 credit hours) and 2 elective courses (equivalent to 6 credit hours). In addition, students are required to complete a dissertation equivalent to 12 credit hours in order to graduate.

A candidate shall be required to pass all the courses with at least a "B" grade and attain a minimum a CPGA of 3.00. In certain circumtances, a candidate may be required to take pre-requisite courses.

All Master of Science in Accounting students are required to take the following courses:

ACC 6620   MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING
ACC 6630   ACCOUNTING THEORY AND POLICY
  ACC 6640   ISLAMIC WORLDVIEW AND ISLAMIC ETHICS
  ACC 6810   ISLAMIC ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE
ACC 6820   ACCOUNTING RESEARCH METHOD

Electives (At least 6 Credit Hours)
In addition to the core courses, students are also required to take at least 6 credit hours of elective courses. The Department offers various elective courses covering the areas of Islamic Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Public Sector Accounting, which are listed below:

DISSERTATION (12 Credit Hours)

After completing all the courses (i.e, 6 core courses and 2 elective courses), students will proceed with a dissertation before they could graduate. The research proposal will be specifically developed in their Accounting Research Methods course (i.e. ACC 6820). Once they have presented their research proposal and subsequently approved by the Department's Postgraduate Committee, they may proceed with their research under the supervision of the assigned supervisor(s).
