LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE MASTER OF ECONOMICS PROGRAM

By the end of the programme, students should be able to:

1) acquire in-depth knowledge of finance concepts and theories within their areas of     specialisation.

2) conceptualize, organise and resolve complex problems within the areas of study.

3) conduct and synthesize research in the specialise disciplines.

4) use appropriate computer technologies to analyse research data.

5) demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines through a report     writing and presentation of the research.

6) formulate an integrated research between Islamic and conventional finance theories     in their respective field of study.

7) apply modern finance theory in a corporate decision-making process using     appropriate communication and critical thinking skills.

8) integrate change of information technology in their decision –making processes.

9) utilize leadership skills, resolve conflict and act independently.

10) develop an awareness of the ethical and environmental ramifications of their      decisions.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Applications are to be made on the prescribed forms, which may be obtained from the Admissions Unit, Admissions and Records Division (A&R). The general requirements for admission into the program are as follows:

  A relevant Bachelor degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning or any other certificate recognized to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant progessional experiences.
   
  English Language requirements of at least 550 in TOEFL or 6.0 in IELTS


DURATION

Students may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students must enroll for a minimum of 9-12 credit hours per semester. Part-time students may register for 6 credit hours each semester.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Master of Economics program comprises of 36 credit hours of coursework alone or with research paper/thesis. Students in the Master of Economic program are required to take 12 credit hours of core courses and at least 12 credit hours of elective courses.

Students may be required to take pre-requisite courses. This applies mainly to those who have undergraduate degrees not in economics but in related disciplines. The basic pre-requisite courses include Foundation of Islamic Economics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics and Econometrics.

All Master of Economics students are required to take the following courses:

PROGRAM OPTIONS

The Master of Economics program provides three (3) options for students to choose. These are:

Option 1 :

credit hours of coursework + Thesis
Option 2 :

credit hours of coursework + Research Paper
Option 3 :

credit hours of coursework (one of which is Applied
 
Economic Research)

A student who opts for option 1 or option 2 must submit a thesis or research paper proposal to the Department's postgraduate coordinator. Once the proposal is received, the coordinator will set up an oral defence for the thesis proposal or appoint an examiner for the research paper proposal. Once it is approved, the student can proceed with the research writing. A supervisor and, if necessary, a co-supervisor, will be appointed for the student.

For option 3, the student must register for ECON 6999: Applied Economic: Research, normally in the final semester of the student's studies. To enroll in the course, an outline of the research plan needs to be submitted to the Department's postgraduate coordinator two weeks before the semester begins for approval.
