for the qualifying examination, students must successfully complete
all course work relevant to the exam. The examination consists
of a three-hour written examination and an oral examination. The
qualifying examination is scheduled and administered by the Kulliyyah

the course work undertaken by the candidate as well as general
knowledge related to Islamic economics and macroeconomic and microeconomic
theories. A student who failed the qualifying examination may
appeal to reist for the examination at a later date. Failure to
pass the examination in the second attempt will cause the student

PH.D
DISSERTATION
Dissertation Supervisory Committee
Once
a student is notified that he/she has passed the qualifying comprehensive
examination, he/she needs to submit his/her research area together
with the proposed supervisors for the dissertation. The Kulliyyah
Postgraduate Committee will then initiate the appointment of the
student's Dissertation Supervisory Committee. This committee will
consist of a minimum of two faculty members. In some cases, an
external supervisor may be appointed for the student. Once the
committee is set up, the student is required to submit the dissertation
proposal within one semester. Successful defense of the proposal
constitutes a pass for the student's field examination.
Dissertation
Proposal Defense
The
Kulliyyah Postgraduate Committee will schedule a dissertation
proposal defense after a candidate has submitted a formal proposal
approved by his/her Dissertation Supervisory Committee. The candidate's
Dissertation Supervisory Committee Chairperson is responsible
for requesting the scheduling of the defence. A copy of the proposal
should accompany the request.
The Postgraduate Committee will set the time and place of the
defense, after consultation with the Dissertation Supervisory
Committee. The defense is then announced two weeks in advance
to the Kulliyyah faculty members and postgraduate students. It
is compulsory for all postgraduate students to attend all defenses.
All faculty members are encouraged to take an active part in the
proposal defense.
Once the proposal has been approved, the candidate can proceed
to dissertation writing and must register for the remaining dissertation
hours until the dissertation is formally defended. The dissertation
must incorporate suggestions made by the faculty during the proposal
defense. The dissertation is not considered complete until it
has been approved by the candidate's Dissertation Supervisory
Committee and accepted by the Kulliyyah Postgraduate Committee.
Manuals describing acceptable styles are available from the Kulliyyah
office or the Center of Postgraduate Studies.
Dissertation
Defense
With
recommendation from the candidate's Dissertation Supervisory Committee,
the candidate must complete and submit the "Intention to
Submit Dissertation" form three months before submission
of the final draft. Upon receiving the form, the Kulliyyah Postgraduate
Committee will initiate the process of appointing examiners for
the candidate.
When the candidate's Committee agrees that the dissertation is
ready for defense, the candidates has to submit five copies of
the dissertation to the Kulliyah Postgraduate Committee, which
will then be forwarded to the Center of Postgraduate Studies.
The Center of Postgraduate Studies will the send the dissertation
to examiners for evaluation. Once feedback from the examiners
is received, which is normally within two months, the Center will
arrange the defense for the dissertation. The result of the defense
will be announced by the Center of Postgraduate Studies.
